Found My Niche, Now What?

by Vickie Perry Barker

I finally found my niche and it only took 3 years! Unbeknownst to me, it has been staring me in the face for a long time. (No, this is not a late April Fool’s joke.)

So, why did it take me so long to realize it? It’s a long story but here’s the short version.

I couldn’t claim my niche because I was busy overextending myself – trying to be everything to everyone.

Instead of focusing on my strengths and how I can use them to provide the best experience to my clients, I stretched myself too thin. I tried to do and be it all. I didn’t set enough boundaries. I took on projects I could have outsourced, and I held on to a few clients much longer than I should have.

Not anymore!

Effective immediately… I am focusing on providing paralegal and legal support services to litigation and trial attorneys. I will provide ongoing, collaborative support to only a handful of attorneys and their in-house staff. This frees up their time and makes the practice of law for the litigator less stressful, even if only a *little*.

This is nothing new for me, really. I provided legal support for attorneys  long before this business. It’s what I do, what I know best, and the area that allows me to provide the most value. It’s where my passion is. It just took me a while to embrace it.

So, now what?

Great question! I won’t pretend to know the *right* next moves. I’m not so sure I have to know at this moment.

But here are some of my next steps, in no particular order:

  • Focus on my current clients and ways I can step my customer service up
  • Invest in my business – technology, training and education
  • Develop systems and processes to help my business flow smoothly
  • Learn more about my audience – what they need, where they hang out on and offline, and find ways to better serve them
  • Collaborate with other business owners that offer services I do not
  • Create! Participate! Engage! Connect!

Remember that gut check I mentioned earlier? Let’s just say it revealed more than my strengths.

I have work to do… a lot! Connections to make, content to create, and fear to shake. I’m up for the challenge though.

How about you? Have you found your niche? Care to share the process that worked for you?
