Are you considering outsourcing your legal work? Do you know the difference between legal outsourcing and offshoring?
If you’ve been known to confuse the two terms, you are not alone. This is something I’ve discussed with several lawyers and legal professionals.
Although the two terms are often used interchangeably, their meanings differ. It’s important that you know the difference before you invest another minute (or dollar) outsourcing or offshoring your legal work.
Legal Outsourcing and Offshoring Defined
Wikipedia does a good job defining both terms…
“Legal outsourcing refers to the practice of a law firm or corporation obtaining legal support services from an outside law firm or legal support services company.”
“Offshoring describes the relocation by a company of a business process from one country to another — typically an operational process, such as manufacturing, or supporting processes, such as accounting.”
Is Offshoring a Good Move for your Firm?
It depends. What type of projects are you outsourcing?
When it comes to offshoring, you can expect language and cultural barriers. That’s pretty much a given as English is a second language for companies overseas.
If you’re looking for a paralegal to prepare legal documents and correspondence to courts and attorneys on your behalf, the language barrier can be overwhelming and outsourcing domestically may be the best move for you.
