Hi! I’m Vickie Perry Barker, a Virtual Paralegal and Legal Blog Assistant, mompreneur and so much more!
My first “office job” was as a secretary to the owner of a small construction company. I was responsible for basic office administration, including answering the phones, client relations, invoicing, general correspondence, inventory, supply ordering, account receivables and payables. I loved the job! Along with it came a great deal of responsibility, which I believe prepared me for my career as a legal professional.
I have worked in the legal field since 1998. I accepted a position as a file clerk in a huge corporate law firm. Today that firm is still one of the largest firms in Atlanta. Despite its prestige, it wasn’t long – in fact, only a few months – before I realized I didn’t “fit” well in the Big Law setting. It’s structure limited my ability to step outside of the “file clerk role,” and I was becoming increasingly eager to learn more about assisting attorneys. Although I was grateful for the position, I preferred a smaller firm and more intimate environment.
Months later, I was chosen over several other applicants to fill a “Jr. Legal Assistant” position with a small boutique medical malpractice firm in Midtown Atlanta. I’ll admit, convincing two partners to give me a chance with practically NO legal experience was a challenge. (But, I’m always up for a challenge!) I was able to convince them and I’ve been a small firm gal since that time!
Over the years, I’ve assisted attorneys practicing in various areas – general practice, civil litigation (plaintiff and defense), commercial litigation, criminal law (federal and state), appellate law, medical malpractice, products liability, workers compensation and family law.
I’ve obtained most of my legal experience from working directly with brilliant lawyers, seasoned paralegals and legal secretaries. I have no fancy paralegal certificate hanging on my office wall. Just old fashioned hands-on legal experience and impeccable references.
In June 2006, I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia State University. And, in January 2007, I opened the doors of Full Service Virtual Support, an Atlanta based virtual legal support firm.
From my home office in Atlanta (and with the help of a small team), I provide virtual paralegal, legal administrative, and legal blog support to solo lawyers and small firm attorneys.
The personal side:
I’m a mother of 2 and wife of 10 years. I was born into a family of entrepreneurs and have possessed an entrepreneurial spirit since my early childhood years! I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges solo practitioners face in the day-to-day operation of their businesses; whether it’s budget concerns, time-consuming grunt work or never-ending to-do lists.
In my spare time, I love to read anything I can get my hands on. I also enjoy gardening. I’ll plant practically anything that will grow… perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs…you name it and I’ve probably attempted to grow it. On sunny afternoons, I enjoy riding my motorcycle (Honda CBR!) or Meyers Manx dune buggy along with my hubby and friends.
I like to say I’m a…32 yr old Virtual Paralegal, Legal Blog Assistant, Legal Ghostblogger, WordPress Lover, small business owner, Atlanta native (1 of few left), legal researcher, ghostwriter, fast typist, mompreneur, wife, mother of 2, motorcyclist, mother’s only child, gardener, motivator, hard worker, go-getter, coupon lover, frugalicious… but who’s worried about labels.
If you want to know more about what I do and how I do it, just ask me.
